Does Virginia and North Carolina have the same state flower?

Someone sended me a card with all the state flowers and it said Virginia and North Carolina were both the American Dogwood. I thought all the flowers for every state were supose to
They both have (technically) different state flowers. North Carolina has the Flowering Dogwood and Virginia has the American Dogwood.

Why was North Carolina's state flower chosen?

The General Assembly chose the state flower as the dogwood back in 1941. I cannot say why the dogwood over another type other than the fact that the people

North Carolina State Flower
In the spring, the blossoms, which are white in the wild, are pink in gardens all over the state. The dogwood are everywhere and are a symbol of The Tar Heel state.
